For 25 years, Studio One Dance Theatre (SODT) has leaped across the bounds of formal dance education, providing technical training in an environment that nurtures and supports each student. As a cornerstone of the Chicago arts community, our prestigious reputation stems from a talented staff of professional dancers who have an ability to give students the tools needed to excel in the arts, and learn that they can achieve anything. It’s a dynamic vision that strikes the perfect balance between proper dance instruction and the pure joy of movement.
“The drive that my child has practicing her tap steps because she wants to be the best fills me with pride. I want parents to know what a bargain they are getting [at SODT]. They are actually getting a foundation that is unshakable for life.”
— Michael Henry, parent of SODT student
Where potential becomes possible.
Whether it’s jazz, ballet, hip hop, modern or tap - Studio One Dance Theatre students learn more than just technique. They learn how the art of movement can tell a story, argue a point, and evoke an emotion. At SODT, the arts are used as a vehicle to challenge students, exposing them to a wide range of careers both on and off the stage. Alumni have gone on to achieve successful careers in professional dance, performing in productions of The Nutcracker, The Lion King, and the Chinese production of Disney’s Aida. Many have also joined some of the country’s most prestigious dance companies, including Alvin Ailey Dance Theater, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, the Dallas Black Dance Theatre, and Joel Hall Dancers.
“Studio One exposed me to so much...music, theater, art, my own creative expression, developing and implementing projects, marketing, and planning. I learned a lot of skills that translated well to being a successful college student (undergrad and grad) as well as a professional.”
— Dr. Allyse Sturdivant, SODT alumna
Dance… and so much more.
At Studio One Dance Theatre, students learn more than just dance steps - they discover the steps needed to empower themselves, celebrate the African American culture, and realize their true potential. SODT goes beyond traditional training, encouraging students to gain a deeper understanding of community awareness, health and fitness, entrepreneurial and communications skills, theater appreciation, and cultural pride. It’s a full spectrum of dance exposure - taught by instructors who mentor, encourage, and inspire. We provide the tools, training and support needed to pursue a future in professional dance - or any other path a student may choose.
“This is an extremely relevant group of artists producing compelling work. Through its partnerships with professional artists from all disciplines, Studio One Dance Theatre plants a seed of experience that will grow in youth, young adults, and their families. I am blessed to have been a part of the company’s 25 year history. Happy 25th and keep making those lifelong memories for young artists on the stage. I am a super fan for life, excelsior!”
— Anthony Peeples, Actor
Where teachers become mentors.
Our hand-picked staff transcends the traditional role of educator. As professional dancers themselves - many with degrees in dance - each instructor combines their own professional background with a unique ability to infuse cultural awareness, social justice and responsibility, and professional development into their teaching. This dynamic approach allows students to discover how dance can truly unveil possibilities for today and beyond.
Performances on the cutting-edge.
No one puts on a show like Studio One Dance Theatre. Never satisfied with run-of-the mill dance recitals, SODT has defined a whole new way to showcase the medium of dance. These “dancicals” combine the beauty and expertise of dance with awe-inspiring storytelling that celebrates African American history, culture and legacy. Productions often include professional actors, designers and videographers who collaborate to create full scale theatrical productions, and bring new life to the art of movement. SODT students have performed at Disney World, on BET, at The Taste of Chicago, and at Chicago’s Gospel Fest.
